Cosmic Prison Commando preview
posted by Grim on 14/10/2008 at 23:30

Carnivac (aka Hiro), a pixel-artist, is working on a CPC-like game on PC for a retro-remake competition. When the contest is over and the game is complete, if a capable CPC coder wants to make a real version for the CPC then he'll provide all the graphic files, the music, maps and notes as to how the game plays and works to build the game-engine for use on the real CPC and also make any necessary modifications needed to run.

Here is a little slide-show (it will run on 64Kb machine) with the screenshots of the game directly transfered to the CPC so you can take a closer look at the awesome quality of the graphics. And if you want to play this game on your CPC, then it's not too late to learn Z80 assembly first :)

Edit: Eh! SuperSylvère is yelling that he also transfered these screenshots! Damn! You can grab them here as OCP Art Studio files (.SCR & .PAL).

GrafX2 beta 97%
posted by Grim on 13/10/2008 at 21:33

PulkoMandy just released an improved and updated version of GrafX2, a pixel-art drawing software for modern computer. Sourcecode is available and should compile on Linux, Mac and windoh. A Win32 binary version is available at the moment (Linux and Mac binaries will come later I guess).

This software is actively supported, you can help by providing bug-reports, features requests or just fan-mail :)

Check the project homepage at http://code.google.com/p/grafx2/ for more details (and Pouët for the Glöps).

CPC-SDK
posted by Grim on 25/09/2008 at 21:50

Krusty, Cloudstrife and PulkoMandy started a new project called cpcsdk.

The goal is to provide easy-to-use cross development tools for the Amstrad under Linux, to speed up development of your demos and games.

Most of the tools are designed to be used from a makefile and are only useable from the command line. Amongst other things, you will find an image converter, an image viewer, the first tool for reading and writting floppies from an usb drive (limited to romdos d1 disks), a new version of Caprice with some improvements, and a port of ramlaid's cpctools to linux.
Most of them should also compile under Windows, or wathever OS you are using, if you're lucky enough.

Phat Too
posted by Grim on 18/09/2008 at 18:07

Wtf?! 2 months after his come back demo on the Amstrad Plus, Norecess strike again with Phat 2 on CPC!

The demo is entirely based on a fullscreen animation playback routine (narrow-minded... erm... well, technically inclined people might not enjoy this very much, hello BDCIron! :). Moreover, the demo is not programmed in C but with good old Z80 assembly (back to roots?). Require 128Kb RAM to run.

Wanna see a glimpse of the Mortel underworld? I started digging out the graphics I still have on floppies and... there's much more unreleased stuff than I though.

If you wanna have a look, I put almost all of them on this webpage and I may update it from time to time (when I will discover more gfx).

Pornophonique is a german music band. Their latest release, 8-Bit Lagerfeuer, is... well, simply awesome! :)

Their music style is some sort of electro/pop/rock and they are using LSDJ (on Gameboy) in most of their tracks. Feel free to support these guys and buy the album as a real CD.

Knoc! Knoc! Who's there?
posted by Grim on 20/07/2008 at 15:06

Guess who's back with a new demo?

PHAT is a demo for Amstrad Plus (128kb RAM required), it's coming from overseas and will show you some nice effects but also that demo can be done using C language (with Z88dk in this case).
If you want to know more about how to use C on CPC/Plus, you can go there to get started.

Twister contest
posted by Grim on 22/01/2008 at 3:38

To all those living in their own world and are not following what's going on in the demoscene, a funny twister contest appeared in the C64 scene and is spreading to others platforms.
The rules? Just do a twister (or rubber bar, as you wish) in 256bytes.
The price? As usual: pride, glory and a free beer at the next party! :)

This is a screenshot of some of these twisters :
Twisting Sister (C64)
Twisting Twistor Is Twisting 3 by Camelot (C64)
ZXwister by Ate Bit (ZX Spectrum) (I love this one! :)
Twistiminus by Arkos (CPC)
You will find more of them at Pouët.net.

CPC coders out there (hello Optimus ;), if you wanna code something but are too busy with work, wife, etc, just try to do a 256bytes demo while your coffee-break and join the twist!
